Whilst speaking with Zorich - one of our players - in-game the other day, he mentioned that Perkins' "The Glory of the Guards" quest was unwinnable because the rats are just too tough to kill with the equipment currently available to players.
Obviously, we laughed at his girlishness.
Then we sat down, got beaten up a few times by rats ourselves, and decided he was right. Now, the battle system was always going to be replaced - old-timers amongst you will remember my dislike for the default "run-into-stuff" systems prevalent in the game. But we'd planned to wait until we got through the rest of our list - quests and so on.
However, if players can't fight (and win) then that limits the kinds of quests we can implement - and seriously screws up the prospect of Caste Quests (Which are gonna be the really hard ones). So, we're putting the new battle system into place now.
The planning has been done for quite a while, and all the theoretical programming is finished. All that remains is to put a physical skin onto the idea. Hopefully, we should have something to show by the end of the week - and by next Monday, with any luck, the new system will be in place and running smoothly.
As for the system itself, well, think Pokémon - but the player has an opportunity to get their hands dirty as well (Because seriously, what kind of man gets an electric rat to do all their fighting for them?). Honest, it'll be a lot of fun.
